Shopping in Duisburg

Duisburg’s city center offers excellent shopping opportunities, with Königstraße, Sonnenwall, and Münzstraße providing a variety of attractive shopping options. However, the availability of food stores and parking is somewhat limited – especially free parking.

The wide and spacious pedestrian zone on Königstraße, featuring Forum Duisburg, CityPalais, and Königsgalerie, is partially covered and serves as the main event area in Duisburg’s city center. Throughout the year, it hosts various events, from the weekly farmers’ market and the traditional Duisburg Christmas Market to the wine festival and the arts and crafts market.

Today, the main attractions for shopping in Duisburg’s center are the Forum Duisburg, opened in 2008, the new CityPalais opposite König-Heinrich-Platz, and the completely redesigned Königsgalerie at the end of Königstraße. Consequently, traditional shopping streets like Sonnenwall with its small specialty shops, Tonhallenstraße (Tonhallenpassage), and the area around Münzstraße are becoming less attractive.

In addition to Königstraße and the aforementioned shopping streets and passages, the longest street in Duisburg, Düsseldorfer Straße, is also part of Duisburg’s city shopping mile. One of the most popular spots on Düsseldorfer Straße is Galeria Kaufhof. Located near the Lifesaver Fountain by Niki de Saint Phalle/Jean Tinguely at König-Heinrich-Platz, Galeria Kaufhof offers a classic department store selection from clothing, stationery, and perfume to toys, housewares, and jewelry.

Overall, the shopping offerings in Duisburg’s city center, from the main train station to Münzstraße with the popular Knüllermarkt (decor & home accessories), can be described as diverse. Alongside discount stores like Kik, TK Maxx, Kodi, and Tedi, which are typical for economically weaker regions, Duisburg’s pedestrian zone and associated shopping centers feature a vibrant retail mix. Specialized shops and fashion boutiques sit next to retail chains like Karstadt, C&A, Zara, H&M, Saturn, and outlet stores. From luxury goods to bargain items, you can find just about anything in Duisburg. Additionally, ice cream parlors, benches, restaurants, and eateries invite you to enjoy lunch or dinner.
