In Duisburg, numerous popular cycling routes intersect and connect, such as the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route, the Rhine Cycle Route, the Industrial Heritage Trail, and the Lower Rhine Route.
Cycling in the Ruhr region and cycling holidays in the Ruhr Metropolis: a dense cycle path network of more than 1,200 kilometers runs through the Ruhr region and forms the foundation of radrevier.ruhr.
1,200 km route network
The Ruhr region is developing into a cycling metropolis and impresses with an extensive junction network of over 1,200 kilometers. Well-developed former railway lines and scenic canal-side paths provide safe and uninterrupted cycling enjoyment away from road traffic, while also offering fascinating glimpses into the backyards and gardens of the Ruhr Metropolis.
The newly installed junction network helps with orientation and guides visitors directly to the highlights. In particular, the impressive landmarks of industrial heritage create unforgettable holiday experiences.
15 themed tour suggestions provide deep insights into the development and history of the region. The RevierRoutes range from 30 to 70 kilometers and follow the new junction network. Whether “Mine Tour,” “Railway History(ies),” “Floodplain Land,” or “Spoil Heap Bliss” – each tour tells its own story. On many routes, the former railway lines converted into cycle paths play an especially important role. Around Duisburg, the HOAG Route and the Green Path are among the best-known railway trails. Both can easily be explored from Duisburg on the RevierRoute “Steel Kitchen.”

Route of Industrial Heritage by Bike
Across the Ruhr area, there are 25 anchor points of industrial heritage. In Duisburg, these include the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, the Museum of German Inland Navigation, and the Duisburg Inner Harbor. Along the way, many other exciting industrial monuments are waiting to be discovered. Seventeen panoramas promise breathtaking views of the industrial landscape, including Alsumer Berg in northern Duisburg and Tiger & Turtle in southern Duisburg. The history of the Ruhr area is inextricably linked with the history of its workers. Thirteen typical workers’ settlements, which are still preserved and inhabited today, tell their stories.
The well-signposted cycle paths of the Route also connect the major highlights of industrial heritage outside Duisburg, such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein or the Gasometer Oberhausen. A cycling holiday on the Route of Industrial Heritage quickly becomes a little journey through the region’s eventful history.
Sauerland and Ruhr Metropolis
Surprises are guaranteed: No other river in Germany connects culture and nature in such close proximity.
Starting from Ruhrkopf near Winterberg, various experiences line up along the 240 km route. Whether it’s the Bike Arena Sauerland with a diverse network of trails, the Bruchhauser Steine with its breathtaking views over large parts of Sauerland, the Ramsbeck visitor mine, or the historic town center of Arnsberg: everyone finds their highlight along the Sauerland Ruhr.
Downstream, the cycle path leads into the Ruhr Metropolis. Visitors can expect numerous industrial cultural remnants along the route. Cyclists experience the history of the Ruhr area as they pass disused mining facilities up to the inland port in Duisburg. Here, the Ruhr flows into the Rhine, marked by the widely visible Rheinorange landmark, the endpoint of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route.
NiederRheinroute
Covering a length of 2,000 km, the NiederRheinroute opens up the entire Lower Rhine region between Übach-Palenberg in the south and Emmerich am Rhein in the north. It is Germany’s densest network of cycle paths.
Dense Network of Cycle Paths
Mostly away from major traffic routes, the NiederRheinroute is excellently signposted and leads over quiet, mostly asphalted forest, field, and farm tracks. Duisburg is considered the “Gateway to the Lower Rhine.” From here, the route partly follows dikes through the varied, typically Lower Rhine landscape.
